Opera Composition Competition


Johann Joseph Fux Competition for Opera Composition presented by the Province of Styria

On the occasion of the transformation of the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz into a university in 1998 the Styrian Government endowed a cultural prize named “Johann Joseph Fux Competition for Opera Composition “ which is organized by the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG). This competition is dedicated to Johann Joseph Fux (1660 – 1741), the great Styrian composer of the baroque period who was born near Graz.The competition usually takes place every three years. Up to now this prize was awarded four times: 1998, 2000, 2003 (in the year of Graz called “European Capital”) and 2006.2011 the Johann Joseph Fux Competition for Opera Composition presented by the Province of Styria organized by the KUG will be held under a new concept. It combines both an invited competition and the commissioning of compositions. Premiere is scheduled for 2013.
