Artistic Doctoral School

In the winter semester of 2009/10 the KUG implemented a new Doctor of Arts Program. This will be carried out as a three-year doctoral study program and end with the awarding of the degree “Dr. artium”. The conception of the new study program is based on the recommendations of the Austrian University Board and involves the principle of internal public presentations in the form of artistic performances and progress reports, as well as the judgements of external advisers. Measures have been put into place ensuring that candidates are qualified both at the time of admission and throughout the whole course of their study period. Plans are underway to ensure that exceptional candidates are assisted financially by means of the KUG scholarship system as well as by cooperating with artistic research projects that have external means of support.

The Doctor of Arts program is directed towards all those talented persons who can already show evidence of having pursued a substantial artistic career and who wish to undertake a study of excellence in order to develop their talents further by means of artistic and scholarly reflection (“artistic research”).

It is recommended that all candidates read the introduction to the curriculum for the Dr. artium program at KUG as well as the article “Kunst als Forschung” (by Florian Dombois, Bern). For a deeper understanding, it is furthermore recommended that they read: “The debate on research in the arts” (by Henk Borgdorff, Amsterdam).
