Costs, Grants, Allowances
1. Tuition Fees
On September 24, 2008, the National Assembly adopted an amendment to the tuition fees act. From this date on, it is necessary to pay in time the tuition fees and/or the dues of the Austrian National Union of Students (“ÖH Beitrag”) in order to register for the next semester. Contrary to the popular opinion published frequently in the media, the tuition fee has not been abolished generally. However, major changes have been made:
- The fee depends on the minimum length of study plus a grace period of two semesters (in case of degree programs for every period of study), on nationality and on the time when payment was made. As before, the amount to be paid in the grace period shall increase by 10% to € 416.70 (incl. dues of Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH-Beitrag)).
- The tuition fee amount was standardized to € 363.36 and large groups of students are either exempt from payment or may apply for remission.
What’s tuition fee for students of non-degree programs?
During regular registration period of the respective term, students of non-degree programs shall pay a tuition fee of € 363.36 plus the dues of the Austrian National Union of Students (“ÖH-Beitrag”) in the amount of € 17,- irrespective of nationality.
If applicable, students of a university course shall pay a course fee plus the dues of the Austrian National Union of Students (“ÖH-Beitrag”).
What’s tuition fee for students from Austria
Students of degree programs from Austria, an EU or EEA country as well as students who Austria has to grant the same rights for entry to the professions as nationals on account of international treaties (e.g. Geneva convention refugees) and students having the legal status of long-term residents from a third country shall be exempt from payment of tuition fees throughout the minimum length of study plus a grace period of two semesters (in case of degree programs for every period of study). This case given, they shall pay just the dues of the Austrian National Union of Students (“ÖH-Beitrag”, € 17,-) when registering for the next semester until expiry of the period of grace (winter term: November 30; summer term: April 30).
If the period of exemption (minimum length of study plus a grace period of two semesters) has been exceeded, there are two options for students to continue their studies:
- within the general period of registration they either pay the tuition fee for the semester in question plus the “ÖH-Beitrag” (€ 380.36). The amount to be paid in the grace period shall increase by 10% (€ 416.70);
- or they shall assert a justification for exemption and will be exempted from payment of tuition fees. In this case, they shall pay just the dues of the Austrian National Union of Students (“ÖH-Beitrag”, € 17,-) until expiry of the period of grace (winter term: November 30; summer term: April 30).

What’s the tuition fee for students from other countries?
Students of degree programs from other countries (neither Austrian, EU or EEA nationals, nor students who have been granted the same rights nor students having the legal status of long-term residents from a third country) and students without citizenship shall pay tuition fees within the general period of registration in the amount of € 380.36. If the tuition fees are paid within the period of grace, the amount to be settled will increase by 10% also for these students, i.e. a sum of € 416.70 shall be paid.
Are there any exceptions to these rules?
The University Act of 2002 stipulates reasons for the exemption from tuition fees.
For in-depth information please see the Application form for the exemption from tuition fees.
Are there rebates for working students?
Working students who can furnish proof that they earned at least € 5.128,62 in calendar year 2010, € 5.008,36 in calendar year 2009 or € 4,886.14 in calendar year 2008 shall be entitled to apply for exemption from tuition fees (proof: income tax assessment note of the tax office in charge).
Applications can be made if these students are Austrian citizens or EU/EEA nationals or students who Austria has to grant the same rights for entry to the professions as nationals on account of international treaties (e.g. Geneva Convention refugees). This is necessary just if the minimum length of studies plus a grace period of 2 semesters (in case of degree programs for every period of study) have already been exceeded.
In addition, under certain conditions tuition fees are allowable for tax purposes since 2004. This is the case if your studies are considered education and further education in connection with your occupational activity or retraining.
Those working students whose income exceeds the allowance of € 10,900 or 10,000 (in case of self-employment) may profit from this rule.
Please be aware that, in any case, you will have to pay the stipulated tuition fees by March 1 or October 1 or, at least, you will have to apply for exemption from tuition fees (if applicable) so that you will still be able to register for courses!
