Austrian Foreign Law Regulations
The following information is for students who need a visa, in regards to the Law for Foreign Students and Researchers in Austria (Niederlassungs- und Aufenthaltsgesetz ).

As of September 2008, the following simplification for third-country citizens is effective at KUG: a decision on the conditional admission to KUG will be given together with the invitation to the entrance exam.
After receiving the conditional Acceptance Letter (including the exact dates and location of the exams) from the Registrar's Office, please apply for a student residence permit (“Aufenthaltsbewilligung - Studierender”) at the Austrian Embassy or Consulate General in your home country, so you are allowed to travel to Graz for the KUG's entrance examination and finish up other necessary application procedures.
Besides the fully completed and signed application form you will also have to submit the following at the Austrian Embassy or Consulate in your home country:
completely filled-out and signed application form
your valid passport and copies of your passport
your birth certificate and an authorized translation of your birth certificate
1 or 2 recent passport-sized photographs 3,5 x 4,5 - 4,0 x 5,0 cm
copy of criminal record (if available from the police office in your home town; the record cannot be more than 6 months old)
official copy of the conditional Acceptance Letter
you must be able to show your sufficient financial means of covering your living expenses and guaranteed housing
1. for applicants up to 24 years old: 438,17 EUR per month
2. for applicants older than 24 years old: 793,40 EUR per month
These amounts include the rent for accommodation of up to EUR 253,51
The fee for the issuance of the residence permit is € 110.--.
Travel health insurance
You (the applicant) must wait in your home country for the decision about your application for a residence permit. If your application is (conditionally) approved, you can apply for a 4-month Visa D. As of 01.01.2011 the issue of the Visa D is subject to a fee: EUR 100. After that, you can travel to Austria in order to complete the KUG's entrance examination.
After passing the entrance examination you must personally pick up your Student Residence Permit (“Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Studierender”) at the appropriate residence authorities. You should bring the appropriate verification of sufficient financial means to cover living costs and guaranteed housing with you when you go to pick up your student residence permit in Austria. The Austrian Embassy in your home country will forward your application to the following address:
Steiermärkische Landesregierung (State Government of Styria), Fachabteilung 7C- Innere Angelegenheiten, Staatsbürgerschaft und Aufenthaltswesen, Paulustorgasse 4, 8010 Graz/Austria.
All required documents and verification should now be submitted to this government office. Please pay attention to the deadlines! In addition to the previously-mentioned requirements and the documents you already submitted in your home country, you must also provide the following verification/supporting documents:
Proof of a passing grade on the entrance examination
Proof of housing accommodations in Graz (contract with landlord or student housing)
Proof of sufficient financial means to cover living expenses (bank account statement)
Certificate of Enrolment and Study Record
Proof of Austrian Health and Accident Insurance coverage. After registering in Graz you can arrange for a Student Health (and Accident) Insurance Policy (“Studierendenversicherung”) through the Styrian State Health Insurance Company (“Steiermärkische Gebietskrankenkasse”), which costs 49.85 EUR per month.

Please make sure that your records and application documents are complete and correct!
Your residence permit will be issued containing a photograph of you and it will also serve as a general identification card.
[Extension: The Austrian residence permit can be extended by going to the Styrian State Government (“Steiermärkische Landesregierung”) in Graz. Fee EUR 110,--. The application for extension should be submitted at least 2 weeks before the first residence permit expires, no exceptions. You must also submit your transcript of records (8 semester hours / 16 ECTS Credits) from the previous academic year.]
