The doctoral programs are an essential contribution to arts-based research and to scientific research. They are the prime instrument for the birth of a generation of young scientists, and in the future also of artists, who will be regarded on university level not really as students but as Early Stage Researchers and as Early Stage Artists. KUG is currently working on two new doctoral programs which shall be offered as from winter term 2009/2010. By introducing three-year doctoral programs governed by doctoral schools the university orientates itself on international trends. Academic doctorate studies, which have been offered in the fields of philosophy and science, will be subject to reforms in this respect. The doctoral program of the arts, or "artistic-scholarly doctoral study", has been a desideratum of KUG for many years and is an absolute novelty.
