Contemporary Music

The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz has an excellent faculty in the field of composition whose creative activities have met wide acceptance and international appreciation and which has contributed to shape the unmistakable profile of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. With its MUMUTH-LAB supported by the university’s profiling initiative, the newly opened MUMUTH provides room for artistic research in the fields of surround sound, electronic music and performance. Projects such as the Johann-Joseph-Fux Competition for Opera Composition, “Opern der Zukunft”, the computer music concert series “Signale”, the cooperation with the ensemble academy “Impuls”, the project “Klangwege” organized in cooperation with the festival “Musikprotokoll” and the numerous concerts of the Institute of Jazz, they all concentrate on the diverse arts-based research which is supported by the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in the field of contemporary music. With the aforementioned arts-based research activities KUG helps considerably to put contemporary music quite naturally on the agenda of cultural life and music education.In winter term 2009/10 a Master‘s program and a post-graduate program titled "Performance Practice in Contemporary Music (PPCM)" were established at the University of Arts. Mentored by the Klangforum Wien, instrumentalists thus have the unique possibility to undergo training in contemporary music.
