Department Ethnomusicology

At the University of Musik and Performing Arts Graz ethnomusicology is exclusively covered by the Institute 13: Ethnomusicology. Subject of ethnomusicological research are tradition and modernity of the world’s musical cultures. On the basis of in-depth field work on the spot by means of participant observation, regional studies are combined with a cross-cultural comparative perspective. Both musical practices and their social contexts are explored.

On the one hand, we engage in fundamental research, covering a wide range of geographical locations and including ethnochoreology as well as computer-assisted research, on the other hand we seek to promote young or future researchers.

We collaborate with several universities in Asia and Latin America. At the institute the monograph series “Graz Studies in Ethnomusicology” is published.
