Department Jazz and Popular Music Research

The Department of Jazz and Popular Music Research is congruent in terms of content, organization and personnel with the Institute for Jazz Research. An institution comparable to the Institute exists worldwide only with the Institute for Jazz Studies at Rutgers University (Newark, New Jersey), which is dedicated exclusively to jazz. In contrast to this, the area of responsibility at the KUG additionally includes popular music as well as various other overlapping areas and points of contact with jazz (Cuban music, world music, Western so-called art music, etc.). Beyond this unique characteristic, the special feature of the institute - apart from the continuity, the quality and the quantity of its publications - lies above all in the music-immanent research orientation, which is integrated into interdisciplinary questions.

The research results, in collaboration with the International Society for Jazz Research, are published in three internationally renowned publications (Jazzforschung / Jazz Research, 46 volumes, Beiträge zur Jazzforschung / Studies in Jazz Research, 15 volumes so far, Jazz Research News, 52 volumes so far).
