Competitions / Courses

Organizing international competitions for the promotion of young talents and for the profiling of the University of Music and Performing Arts itself has been an institutionalized tradition for many years. By taking into account certain age limits, young leading international artists are invited to compete with each other and with our students alike. In addition, for the selection of jurors special importance is attached to international reputation and internationality in order to comply with the requirements of this kind of artistic benchmarking.

The international competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” combines the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz special emphasis both on “Instrumental Excellence and Chamber Music” and on “Contemporary Music”. The ensuing selection of the repertoire, especially for the genre of Duo for Voice and Piano (Lied), has also become exemplary on an international level. Close ties to “Contemporary Music” are inherent also to the Johann-Joseph-Fux Competition for Opera Composition organized by the Institute of Opera in cooperation with the Province of Styria which enriches thus also our special focus on opera.
