Johann Joseph Fux Competition for Opera Composition

The "Johann Joseph Fux Competition for Opera Composition", organised by the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) and presented by the Province of Styria, was launched in 1998 as a regional cultural prize, in recognition of the transformation of the former Academy of Music and Performing Arts into a University. This competition is dedicated to Johann Joseph Fux (1660-1741), the great Styrian opera composer of the baroque period who was born near Graz.

The Opera Composition Prize was awarded for the first time in 1998. As a general rule, the competition takes place every three years. The year 2003 was an exception, when Graz was the “European Capital of Culture”. The prize has been awarded eight times so far. Since 2011 the Johann Joseph Fux Competition for Opera Composition has been held as a competition on invitation.
