Doctoral School for Scholarly Doctoral Studies

Since winter 2009/10 the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) offers a doctoral program at the PhD level, which takes six semesters (three years) to complete. It replaces the former inter-university doctoral studies in philosophy or science. Its outstanding feature is a faculty covering a range of musicological fields unmatched in the German-speaking countries that ensures adequate supervision of doctoral candidates in practically all areas of musicological research.

The newly conceived PhD program is based on the recommendations of the Council of Austrian Universities (Universities Austria) and implements the principle of internal public in the form of progress reports, the involvement of external advisors and reviewers, and the implementation of quality assurance measures already during the admission process as well as during the studies. For exceptional candidates there is a scholarship scheme funded by the KUG, and their incorporation into externally funded research projects is encouraged. The primary objective of these measures is to ensure the competitiveness of postgraduates in the international scientific community.

The following scholarly subject areas are represented at the KUG:

  • Historical Musicology, Music Theory and Church Music Studies
  • Jazz Research and Popular Music Studies
