Doctoral Study Program

On 1 September 2009, the University of Arts in Graz (KUG) inaugurated an Artistic Doctorate Program and a Scholarly Doctorate Programe. These newly conceived doctoral study programs, based on European developments, take six semesters to complete. In addition to the Scholarly Doctorate Program, which is equivalent to a Ph.D., the KUG has established for the first time in Austria an artistic counterpart: the "Artistic-scholarly Doctoral Study"

“Artistic activity generates knowledge.” The Artistic Doctorate Program (“Artistic-scholarly Doctoral Study”) – unique in the German-speaking world – was conceived out of this idea. Characterized by the constant collaboration of artistic activity, that is, interpretation and production, with scholarly reflection, this program has been designated as “Development and Expansion of the Arts” by Austrian university law. The productive synergies which result when artistic and scholarly activities work together produce trenchant, enriching effects and generate new methods of gaining insight. Described in the international context as “artistic research,” this program stands at an equal level with scholarly research.

To quote KUG Professor Ulf Bästlein, the newly appointed director of the Artistic Doctorate Program: “The program of the ‘Artistic-scholarly Doctoral Study’ is a study of excellence directed at those persons who have already achieved a substantial artistic career and who want to develop further their creativity through artistic and scholarly reflection (‘artistic research’).” The doctoral work consists of an artistic-scholarly project (written dissertation and documentation of artistic activity). Doctoral students will be incorporated into the university system as “Early Stage Artists” and thus obtain optimum prerequisites for entry into professional life.

Making Use of Scholarly Potential

The Scholarly Doctorate Program, whose appointed director is KUG Professor Gerd Grupe, is concerned with the guidance and education of students in the scholarly doctoral program. The task here is to make the best possible use of the scholarly potential of KUG, through the networking of its researchers as well as the effective application of resources, and thus guide and educate the next generation of scholars, who will be incorporated into the university system as “Early Stage Researchers.”

In both doctoral programs, external and international consultants will also be called upon to advise the doctoral students. In addition, the KUG will award dissertation scholarships to superior candidates, starting with the Winter Semester 2009/10.
