Admission to the Master's Programme Instrumental Studies

Admission to the Master's Programme Instrumental Studies requires the successful completion of a Bachelor's Programme in the respective instrumentor another relevant, equivalent Degree Programme at a recognized post-secondary educational institution.

Moreover, all external applicants who have not received their Bachelor's Degree at KUG, have to pass an audition (this regulation also applies to candidates who received their Bachelor's Degree at KUG more than two semesters ago) and for Early Music a theoretical part, in addition. For PPCM all candidates (without exception) have to take the audition in the chosen instrument.

If you want to register for the entrance exam, please apply online within the following respective application deadlines:

  • 1 May for the winter term and
  • 30 June for the winter term >>> Please mind that this deadline does not apply to every instrument! or
  • 1 December for the summer term

Please submit the required documents in the course of the online application!

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

 

In the course of the required online application we need the following documents in time to the respective application deadline, in order to be able to forward your documents to our Dean of Studies for checking the equivalency of your preliminary studies:

  • Your Bachelor's Diploma Certificate telling your academic degree (on your University's letter paper and with your University's stamps/seals and signatures)
  • Official German (English is also OK) translation* of the Bachelor's Diploma Certificate
  • Your Bachelor's final examination Certificate (on your University's letter paper and with your University's stamps/seals and signatures)  
  • Official German (English is also OK) translation* of the Bachelor's final examination Certificate
  • Your Transcript of Records (Diploma Supplement / Academic Record / complete list of all subjects that you have passed, the credits/semester hours and grades on your University's letter paper and with your University's stamps/seals and signatures)
  • Official German (English is also OK) translation* of your Transcript of Records / Diploma Supplement / Academic Records / list of subjects
  • Please also pay attention to any required diplomatic legalization* of your documents!

Please note, that your major artistic subject has to be mentioned in your documents. Otherwise, please submit a confirmation about your major artistic subject issued by your University (on your University's letter paper and with your University's stamps/seals and signatures) in addition.

Only after the Dean of Studies has confirmed the equivalency of your preliminary studies you will be notified for the audition.

ENTRANCE EXAM

 

NOTE: The programme set for the Bachelor's final exam in each respective instrument mentioned in the curriculum can serve as a guide concerning the level of difficulty of works, you have to prepare for the audition (please note exceptions like PPCM!).

In case you need an accompanist, you have to bring the appropriate music score with you to the audition!

Admission requires the completion of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent Study Programme in Piano.

Entrance exam:

• Solo performance: a work of Romanticism, an impressionist or modern work

• Chamber music: a sonata for string or wind instruments and piano (it is necessary to bring the instrumental partners for the entrance exam!)

• An instrumental concert by W.A.Mozart or J. Haydn (compulsory pieces)

• A virtuoso work for string or wind instruments and orchestra / piano (e.g. F. Waxmann: Carmen Fantasie, L. Bassi: Rigoletto)

This Master's Programme starts in the academic year 2021/2022, at the earliest!

Performance Practice in Contemporary Music - Instrumental (PPCM)

Admission requires the completion of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent Study Programme in Viola, Violin, Violoncello, Double Bass, Flute (with its variant instruments), Clarinet (with its variant instruments), Oboe/English Horn, Bassoon, Saxophone, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion Instruments, Piano or Accordion.

Please note that not every instrument is offered to each entrance exam date!

In case you need an accompanist, you have to submit the appropriate music score in time to the respective application deadline in advance to the institute 1 to Ms Ferdinanda Anhofer.

Performance Practice in Contemporary Music - Vocal (PPCM)

Admission requires the completion of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent Study Programme in voice.

Students who wish to apply for this Master's programme need the following artistic qualities:

• Curiosity: to develop oneself as a creative artist, inside and outside existing job profiles
• Enthusiasm: for music and music theater of the present
• Courage: to enter unknown territory
• Willingness: to participate in the development of contemporary music
• Exploring the boundaries: expressivity and intimacy, willingness to transgress aesthetic boundaries
• Performative expressions
• Interest: in other art forms and interdisciplinary projects
• Classical vocal training: Advanced vocal skills, flexibility in vocal dynamics, ambitus and timbres

In case you need an accompanist, you have to submit the appropriate music score in time to the respective application deadline in advance to the institute 7 to Ms Ruth Kampel.
