04.-05.10.2018: Symposium "African Musics in Europe: global trends, national specificities"

erstellt am 16. August 2018

Reiterkaserne, Seminar Room 150

The symposium will discuss the paths of dissemination of African music and dance, as well as the present African music scene, in various European countries. A main perspective will consider a comparison between the presence and characteristics of African music in Europe in the last decades and today, while special attention will be given also to the relation between global/national trends and individual experiences of musicians or persons involved in the African music scene.

The main issues to be addressed will involve the fortune of specific folk or neo-traditional genres, repertoires and instruments in Europe; the relation between global world music trends and (European and/or African) national dynamics; the dissemination activities in European countries by scientific institutions, informal associations, and bands or individual musicians; the processes of preservation vs. fusion of African musics in Europe; the role of African musics in defining new communities of performers and audience and in promoting tolerance and integration; the construction of “Otherness” connected to African music.

The symposium aims to allow a deep exchange and discussion among the scholars in the perspective of building a network of researchers working on these topics. For this reason, the paper presentations will last 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes dedicated to questions.
