Liminal states: Journeying into ambiguous places with the IKO

Two installations composed for the IKO loudspeaker array will be presented, alongside an introduction to the artistic journey in which they were realised, its theoretical context, original plans and practical surprises. The themes and materials of both pieces, together with the potential for the IKO to elicit new subjectivities, will be highlighted. The works are audiovisual, though sound-led. Very distinct from one another, the first piece represents a starting point of an artist working with the IKO, with her own ideas and compositional voice.  The second piece meanwhile represents an indistinct point on an ambiguous trajectory, somewhere between control and surrender of the compositional process. The sound materials form a shadow of this trajectory, bringing form and content into a kind of temporary coherence. The IKO’s precision in spatial placement is counterpointed by the semantic ambiguity of places dealt with in the works, and in the process of creating them.

Angela McArthur was artist-in-residence at the Institut of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) in Graz since June 2019. She is a practitioner and PhD candidate, researching the aesthetics of distance in spatial sound for immersive environments. She's worked in studio, live and location environments, and her work draws from the technologies, perception and art of spatial sound, to tackle an intersection of the three. She draws from eco-feminist discourse about the natural environment, and non-human ontologies. She is currently focused on spatial listening as aesthetic practice. She co-produced a Sheffield Docfest-shortlisted VR film in 2017, is working with a US-based geo-scientist's infrasonic sound for an upcoming installation, and has had recent exhibits at Ars Electronica (in collaboration with the BBC), and Tate Modern (in collaboration with Nathaniel Mann).
